PlayStation 1 (PS1) BIOS Setup Guide

Unlike 8-bit and 16-bit cartridge consoles, the PlayStation 1 hardware requires an authentic BIOS firmware to boot discs, manage virtual memory cards, and ensure full game compatibility. Follow this step-by-step guide to set it up in under a minute:

πŸ’‘

BIOS File Requirements for RetroNexus

β€’ Recommended File: scph5501.bin (US / NTSC-U) for widest game compatibility. Alternatively, scph5500.bin (Japan) or scph5502.bin (Europe) are also accepted.
β€’ Exact File Size: Must be precisely 512 KB (524,288 bytes) containing official Sony Computer Entertainment firmware header.
β€’ Format: Raw uncompressed .bin file.

01

Download the BIOS in Safari

On your iPhone or iPad, open Safari and visit ps1emulator.com/bios. Tap to download the scph5501.bin firmware file.

02

Locate in the iOS Files App

Open the built-in iOS Files (Tệp) app and look in your Downloads folder. If the file was downloaded as a .zip archive, simply tap it once in the Files app to unpack and reveal the .bin file.

03

Open RetroNexus Settings

Launch RetroNexus on your iPhone or iPad. Tap the Settings icon (βš™οΈ) located in the bottom navigation tab bar.

04

Tap "Import PS1 BIOS"

Under the Emulation section, find and tap the row with the optical disc icon labeled Import PS1 BIOS.

05

Select Your BIOS File

The iOS file picker will open. Navigate to your Downloads folder and select scph5501.bin.

06

Success & Verification

RetroNexus will instantly verify the 512 KB dump and display: "PS1 BIOS imported. Import a CHD, PBP, or ZIP containing one CUE and its BIN tracks in Library." The BIOS is safely saved in the app's internal sandbox. You only need to do this once!

How to Download & Import Game ROMs

Getting your game library onto RetroNexus is quick and effortless. Here is the complete workflow from web download to first level:

01

Download ROM in Safari

Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to a ROM site like RomsGames.net. Search for your title and download the file. When Safari asks, tap Download to save it to your device.

02

Understand File Formats by Console

β€’ Cartridge Consoles (NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, Genesis): You can import either the direct ROM file (.nes, .gba, .gbc, .sfc, .md) or a single-game .zip archive directly.

β€’ PlayStation 1 (PS1) Formats:
- .chd (Recommended): Highly compressed single disc image with rapid load times.
- .pbp: Single-file PlayStation EBOOT format.
- .zip: Single archive containing the .cue sheet and all associated .bin track files. Note: Do not import bare multi-part .bin files individually without their .cue sheet in a .zip.

03

Import in RetroNexus Library

Launch RetroNexus and navigate to the Library tab. Tap the + button in the navigation bar or the Import Game ROM button. The iOS file picker will appearβ€”browse to your Downloads folder and select your game file.

04

Press Play & Enjoy

RetroNexus will detect the console system automatically, create an entry in your library, and sort it by system. Tap the game thumbnail card to jump right into the game at full 60 FPS!

🎨

Pro Tip: Automatic Box Art & Game Covers

Want beautiful box art in your library? Simply place an image file (.png, .jpg, .jpeg) with the exact same name as your ROM file in the same folder before importing (e.g. CrashBandicoot.chd and CrashBandicoot.png), or pack the cover image directly inside the .zip. RetroNexus will automatically extract and assign it as the cover art!

Troubleshooting & FAQs

  • "Import your PS1 BIOS in Settings β†’ Import PS1 BIOS before playing": This means you haven't imported the PlayStation 1 BIOS yet. Download scph5501.bin from ps1emulator.com/bios and import it via Settings β†’ Import PS1 BIOS.
  • "For PS1, import a CHD, PBP, or ZIP containing the CUE sheet and all BIN tracks": Raw .bin files cannot be loaded by themselves. Either convert your disc to .chd or .pbp, or compress both the .cue file and the .bin tracks together into a single .zip file in Files before importing.
  • Game won't start: Confirm the file extension matches a supported system and is a valid dump rather than an executable or patch (.ips/.bps). For single ZIP archives, ensure it contains only one game ROM file.
  • Audio or graphic glitch: Restart the app or check whether you are running in Low Power Mode. Ensure your device is running iOS 16.0 or later.
  • Save states and fast forward: Tap the in-game floating MENU button at any time during gameplay to open the console menu. From here you can save/load across multiple state slots or toggle turbo fast-forward.

In-App Purchases & Subscriptions

Pricing and plan options are clearly shown inside the app and on the App Store listing. If you previously purchased access on the same Apple ID, tap Restore Purchases in Settings. Subscriptions can be canceled or managed anytime via iOS Settings β†’ Apple ID β†’ Subscriptions.
